Villa Pinara is a prestigious beach house in the true sense. The lawn ends, the sand begins, and there is nothing in between. No road, no wall, no neighbour. Casuarina pines close the property on both sides and nothing is built alongside it, so for the length of your stay the stretch of shore in front of the house is yours, which provides a unique sense of exclusivity.
You will hear the sea before you open your eyes. The pool has already taken the first of the sun, and when you walk out onto the sand there is nobody on it in either direction. Phuket International Airport is only twenty-five minutes away, so that can be your first morning rather than your third.
Five pavilions, ten guests, and enough room that nobody has to negotiate for it. The living pavilion opens on three sides, the teak ceiling lifts to the ridge, and the glass folds away until you cannot say where the room stops and the pool begins. Afternoons here are long. The fans turn, the sea keeps making its noise, and there is nowhere in particular to be.
Each bedroom is its own pavilion with its own door, tucked among gardens and courtyards. Couples travelling together get real privacy. Families get the children close enough to hear and far enough to sleep. Every room has an ensuite bathroom and an outdoor garden shower, warm water under an open sky, and the master wakes up facing the sea.
The pool is twenty metres, long enough to actually swim rather than just cool off, with a shallow end where the children will spend whole afternoons and loungers and umbrellas down one side. The sala at the end of the lawn is where the day goes when the sun is high. When it drops the barbecue comes out and dinner happens on the sand, which is usually the meal everyone talks about afterwards. Early mornings the water is glass, so the kayaks and paddleboards get used before breakfast. There is a gym in one of the pavilions for anyone still keeping a routine.
The whole property is yours, and in practice so is the beach in front of it. Nothing is shared, nothing is fenced off, nobody else comes and goes. You can swim at first light with nobody watching.
The airport is twenty-five minutes south, less than the drive down to Patong or Kata. North the road runs on to Khao Lak, and Phang Nga Bay with its limestone islands is an easy morning by boat. Most guests arrive meaning to do all of it and end up doing very little of it. The beach runs for kilometres and you can walk the whole length at low tide without meeting anyone.
A villa manager, a private chef, housekeeping, a gardener, pool maintenance and overnight security look after the house while you are in it, quietly enough that you mostly just notice things are done. Breakfast is cooked fresh every morning and the chef takes whatever you feel like for the rest of the day. Linen and towels are refreshed through the stay, pool towels daily, and the Wi-Fi reaches every pavilion for the people who cannot quite let go.
